The 49-year-old is bidding to add the WBO title to his IBF and WBA straps but faces a tough test against the hard-hitting Russian.
Kovalev has won 25 of his 26 fights, knocking out 23 of his opponents along the way. His breakout bout came last year when he stopped Nathan Cleverly in the fourth round in Cardiff to win his world title.
Kovalev was 12 when Hopkins won his first world title in 1995 and has boxed a measly 72 rounds compared to the elder statesman's 494.
